When certain muscles in the face come into touch and pull/bundle the skin, causing lines, wrinkles, and folds, dynamic wrinkles are created. These dynamic wrinkles (which are only visible when the muscle is exercising) will become static wrinkles with repetition and time (seen even when the face is at rest). 

Small drops of botulinum toxin are injected into the overactive portion of the muscle, which causes it to relax and cease producing dynamic wrinkles. The effect usually lasts for three months, after which muscle activity returns to normal.
